  • Livares Labs Project: The Remote Sound Recording System (RS²)

At its early stages of sound recording technology, the industry men hauled their recording equipment weighing nearly half a ton on carts to record the sounds of remote areas like a forest. Now as the technology has advanced a lot, we are introducing a remote sound recorder at a quality matching the best and that can be held in the palm of your hand. The System is capable of recording sound from the surrounded remote area at custom intervals and duration with/out any manual intervention. The Recordings are then formatted and stored properly with their time-stamps and are uploaded to storage servers.

INTRODUCTION

The aim of our project is to develop a Remote Sound Recording System with lower power consumption but also maintaining all the quality attributes. In this modern era, sound/voice recorders have become cheaper and better as the time has made the men and his technology sharper. At its early stages of sound recording technology, the industry men hauled their recording equipment weighing nearly half a ton on carts to record the sounds of remote areas like forest. Goal Formulation

The proposed system should at least meet the following goals

  1. Low Power Consumption
  2. The Whole System should be compact
  3. Weather Proof
  4. Customizable
  5. Cheaper

Additional Goals
“Save Power No more mechanics !” –  The whole system is designed with the aim to reduce power consumption, so we haven’t used any high power devices like relay or etc ….
“Connect only when required” –  We have also made care to reduce the internet data usage, by perfectly scheduling the internet connectivity
System Overviewed
As we have said our Remote Sound Recording System has certain goals on quality, size, and power. To maintain all our goals we sought in search of a processor that can make up our goals, which ended up quickly with a result pointing to Raspberry Pi®. Thus  Raspberry Pi®  became the  Core of our system .  Raspberry Pi®  is a  “ Credit-Card-Sized Computer” which is opensource, brilliant, tiny and brave enough to hold and completely manipulate our system at its best.
You can find more about Raspberry Pi®  here What’s a Raspberry Pi?
Problem Formulation
As from Raspberry Pi®, the system is to be started, on the stage of feasibility study problems began to start we have listed the main hurdles one by one

ther thought, we just programmed to make our RTC module updated from the Internet -Time-Servers(Read on NTP here http://www.ntp.org/ )

4. The Custom automated time began to reset when the MC Resets
Soln: This is because the MC circuit have a Volatile memory, this time we are forced from adopting a newer circuit, but we exploited the 56 bytes of NV SRAM that is available in our RTC module, as we said earlier since our whole system is interlinked now it haven’t been another barrier.
5.The construction of the waterproof enclosure for our system.
Soln:  This time we got in search of a “wifi antenna box” that can fit our needs. After having one with us we ported it perfectly to match our needs.
System Functioning
In short, the system works as follows, the sound from the surrounding gets captured by a high sensitive mic which gets boosted and converted to electronic digital data by Wolfson’s sound processor which gets stored and uploaded to the storage server by the Raspberry Pi®.
